The plate is out!!!!! It once was 3/8 " thick, but now is less than 1/4". Wonder where all that metal has gone? Out the bilge-pump as rust!!
My suggestion to all 9.1 owners!GET THAT PLATE OUT!!! It is the Main Keel Backing and can cause a void above the keel bolt nuts and washers, never allowing the bolts to remain tight! Pics to follow.

Well, quess, what, I have a mild steel plate ,glassed into the keel-boss. Rust everywhere underneathy the glass. If I can remove the plate in one piece it will make a good template for the keel bolts. I will let everyone know how it goes.

Ed,
The posts above already provide as much info as I have in my head. Like Jeff, I do not recall ever seeing evidence of metal in the stub while my keel was off the boat. My keel bolts had staining similar to Jeff's before we re-attached the keel. The yard that worked on my keel was Torresen Marine in Muskegon Michigan (231-759-8596). Ask for Brian Torresen. They service many of the larger racing programs on Lake Michigan and have worked on at least 4-6 of the 9.1s raced in our regional one design fleet. Brian knows the boat very well and is currently rebuilding the mast collar on one of the 9.1 Meters in our fleet. Anthing else I might be able to add is already posted in my lengthy notes under the mast step section of the web site board. Hope all goes well.

One other VERY important suggestion: While the keel is off the boat, be sure to check the top of the keel for a stamped weight (in pounds). This should match your keel certificate (if you have one). It might be very worthwhile to record that weight and even take a picture of the stamping for long-term records. Don't be alarmed if it isn;t exactly 3250 lbs, most weren't. In any case, it would simply be very helpful if you (or future owners of the boat) had accurate data (and photographic proof) should the issue ever arise in the future.

I just did my mast step and removed and rebedded my keel last spring.

I didn't cut into the keel stub, but when the boat was in the slings, separated from the keel, I did examine the bolt holes very closely and it appeared to be solid glass.

I had a lot rust around the keel bolts and tracked it to 2 sources. The nuts and washers on the keel bolts themselves were not stainless, appeared to be glavanised, they were very rusty.

After I replaced them all with SS fasteners I still had rust stains and think it was all coming from the corroding hose clamp on the bilge pump strainer.

Good luck

The guy who would really know is the guy who did my mast step when the boat was in Annapolis. He has done 6 or 8 of these. His name is Robert Muller at Muller Marine. I am on the road now and don't have his number, but he is well known in Annapolis and should be in the book. If you email me, I will email you his number.

Ok, does anyone know if there is a metal plate glassed into the keel boss??? I have rust coming up from all the keel bolt holes. I'm in the process of renewing the stingers and the hull above the keel,(along with the mast step). If there is a plate and it is made of mild steel I may want to replace it.
