Russ or Loren, How were those numbers derived? I have a copy of the US Sailing Performance Package for a "stock" 9.1 and the polars in it are quite different. This is what they list as "optimum" <table> <tr> <td> <div> Upwind</div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td>True Wind Speed</td> <td>Boat Speed</td> <td>True Wind Angle</td> <td>Appnt Wind Speed</td> <td>Appnt Wind Angle</td> <td>Heel</td> <td>VMG</td> </tr> <tr> <td>6</td> <td>4.411</td> <td>44.7</td> <td>9.36</td> <td>25.4</td> <td>4.3</td> <td>3.135</td> </tr> <tr> <td>8</td> <td>5.174</td> <td>44.3</td> <td>11.85</td> <td>26.5</td> <td>10.0</td> <td>3.706</td> </tr> <tr> <td>10</td> <td>5.531</td> <td>42.7</td> <td>14.03</td> <td>27.2</td> <td>13.7</td> <td>4.063</td> </tr> <tr> <td>12</td> <td>5.712</td> <td>41.4</td> <td>16.07</td> <td>27.8</td> <td>16.0</td> <td>4.284</td> </tr> <tr> <td>14</td> <td>5.821</td> <td>40.5</td> <td>18.03</td> <td>28.4</td> <td>17.5</td> <td>4.423</td> </tr> <tr> <td>16</td> <td>5.887</td> <td>40.1</td> <td>19.94</td> <td>29.1</td> <td>18.7</td> <td>4.505</td> </tr> <tr> <td>20</td> <td>5.936</td> <td>40.2</td> <td>23.66</td> <td>30.9</td> <td>20.5</td> <td>4.535</td> </tr> </table> <p></p> <table> <tr> <td> <div> Downwind</div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td>True Wind Speed</td> <td>Boat Speed</td> <td>True Wind Angle</td> <td>Appnt Wind Speed</td> <td>Appnt Wind Angle</td> <td>Heel</td> <td>VMG</td> </tr> <tr> <td>6</td> <td>4.141</td> <td>143.1</td> <td>3.55</td> <td>98.6</td> <td>0.9</td> <td>3.311</td> </tr> <tr> <td>8</td> <td>4.939</td> <td>147.3</td> <td>4.52</td> <td>111.0</td> <td>1.1</td> <td>4.154</td> </tr> <tr> <td>10</td> <td>5.294</td> <td>158.0</td> <td>5.17</td> <td>137.3</td> <td>0.8</td> <td>4.939</td> </tr> <tr> <td>12</td> <td>5.841</td> <td>165.4</td> <td>6.21</td> <td>151.8</td> <td>0.7</td> <td>5.654</td> </tr> <tr> <td>14</td> <td>6.294</td> <td>170.3</td> <td>7.51</td> <td>162.2</td> <td>0.6</td> <td>6.205</td> </tr> <tr> <td>16</td> <td>6.689</td> <td>172.9</td> <td>8.99</td> <td>167.6</td> <td>0.7</td> <td>6.638</td> </tr> <tr> <td>20</td> <td>7.385</td> <td>174.1</td> <td>12.16</td> <td>170.5</td> <td>0.9</td> <td>7.346</td> </tr> </table> (man that was a lot of typing!) It appears these polars recommend narrower angles at lower speeds than Loren's |

Bob, the following Polars were provided to me by Loren Thompson our Membership Director. I hope they help you out. If you have any questions feel free to contact Loren, his email is located on the Class Officer page. Russ Fender Class Commodore

Just bought Hull #31 (Whisper, ex Cowardly Lion) now renamed "Survivor". I sail in Southern California, home port is Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. Does anyone have a set of polars for their 9.1? I've been racing for 20 years, the last 15 on my NY 36 (an 80% fractional rig), which I sold in a moment of weakness. It seems that I should trim the boat as if it were a fractional rig, due to the large main. Sailed our 1st race and took a 2nd in a 3 race regatta. The boat seems to come alive when "caps" show up (10 knots +). Any tips would be greatly appreciated. |
