The mast has been painted with the Whitecote from POR15. Two problems, if you use this product, be sure the humidity will not go real high,it did for us and turned a high gloss to a satin finish. It might be better to spray this paint then brush it on aswe have brush stroke showing. It looks good from 6 feet away!

Here in Key West Golden Omen's mast is out and being sanded and preped for recoating. The product I have chosen is called POR 15 Whitecoat. This coating is moisture cured, it does not have microscoptic holes left in the surface so will not corrode again!!! Por 15 web site is www.por15-marine.com.
ps hopefully this info is in a timely base for some others.

After years of racing, the white mast on UNRULY has developed numerous scrapes and scratches. We were thinking about preparing and painting the mast ourselves, rather than having it done professionally. I assume that the original coating is some type of two-part system. Has anyone attempted this? Are there other alternatives to a two-part paint?

I need a paint job too. According to the brochure I have, the mast was Awl-Gripped by Offshore Spars when it was made. Probabaly the best advice for paint repair is with US Paint (makes AwlGrip) until we can talk to someone that has repainted. I've talked to SparTech (good local mast guys) about repainting and they want $2-4K to do the job. Paint removal is the real cost driver. Even if I strip the mast for them, they will sand/bead blast the mast. I'm trying to line up a friend with a good BIG shop for doing the work myself.
I would imagine that there are numerous alternatives available once you have the mast removed and stripped. I've had Dupont IMRON recommended as a good alternative to AwlGrip. Both of these are nasty two part paints that are sprayed on. Sterling has been getting a good reputation as a "do-it-yourshelf" brush on two part paint. There are also some good one part paints like Interlux Brightside, but I am planning on lots of research before picking a paint. I suspose you could have the mast anadized clear or black too. I don't know what that would cost.

I just refinished my mast this winter. I manage a body shop and had the facilities to use so, why not. This is my second mast that Ive sprayed and I have used PPG's single stage DBC Concept. It is a catalized product and sprays and holds up very well. My experience has been that Imron is a very good product but, paint technology has advanced considerably since it came out many years ago. Many of the acrylic urethanes on the market today are of equal (or better) durablity. I priced out Awlgrip after Strictly Sail and decided that I could strip and paint my mast a couple of times for what they wanted for materials. And besides, I'm sorry, if you slam your mast with the pole while jibing hard enough, Awlgrip, Imron, or Concept is probably going to chip.
