2007 ANNAPOLIS NOOD RESULTS & REPORT DAY 1: Annapolis, Md. (April 27, 2007) Ð On the opening day of the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta in Annapolis, Md., sailors aboard the 270 competing boats experienced a no-wind plague that seemingly had spread from Valencia, Spain. Similar to their compatriots at the America's Cup venue, the NOOD sailors suffered a long day of waiting for wind that did not materialize. Racing in all 19 one-design classes was called off by the host Annapolis Yacht Club's race committee. "It was foggy, grey and the wind was all over the place," said Sue Reilly, the event's principal race officer. "At one point, it looked OK on Division 3's race course. We got an anchor set on the committee boat, we set a leeward mark, then the wind dropped back down again to 3.1, then 2.6. You just can't sail in that. By 3pm it was clear that it wasn't going to happen so they postponed all racing for the day. Division 4 followed. Division 1 was able to get a start going for the Etchells, then halfway through the start for the next class, the J/22s, they cancelled it and abandoned for the day." In Division 2, half of the S2s made it around the top mark, and then carried their chutes down to the leeward mark before the wind changed direction and all racing was abandoned. John and Gordon Latrobe's Still a Gorilla (S2.91) were jibing at the front of the fleet before the wind shut down. DAY 2: After another long wait for suitable wind conditions, racing at the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta in Annapolis, Md., finally got underway this afternoon. The 270-boat fleet floated helplessly on the Chesapeake as the wind began to fill in and build. By early afternoon conditions had changed somewhat so the Annapolis YC's race committee started racing on two of the four race courses, while on the other two, it was a long afternoon of waiting through wind direction changes, overcast skies and light drizzle. The Etchells class, on Division 1 race course, completed four races although farther down the Bay, three of the classes on Division 4 race course did not finish within the time limit. In Division 2, three of the one-designs Ð Catalina 27, Cal 25, Alberg 30 Ð completed two races and the S2 7.9 and 9.1 classes had three. John Stefancik (Severna Park, Md.) is the only skipper to have won two races in this division, sailing his S2 9.1 Hurricane Kelley. DAY 3: Sometimes it's worth the wait and today's brilliant weather conditions in Annapolis proved just that. With 10-15 steady knots of wind and bright sunshine, competitors at the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta were treated to a final day of perfect conditions after enduring two days of postponed racing. In Division 2, John Stefancik (Severna Park, Md.) won both of today's races and swept the 6-boat S2 9.1 class on his Hurricane Kelley. It boiled down to the last race for Still-A-Gorilla and Fast Company where second place overall was decided by only one point after 5 races.
