Here is a summary of the 2000 Great Lakes Championship. 2000 GREAT LAKES ONE DESIGN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES EVENTS: June 3-4, 20000: South Haven Invitational, South Haven MI (5 races) June 16-18, 2000: Chicago NOOD Regatta, NA One Design Championship, Chicago IL (5 races) August 5-6, 2000: Milwaukee Grand Prix Regatta, Milwaukee WI (4 races completed of 5 planned) September 2-3, 2000: Muskegon Governors Cup, Muskegon MI (3 races completed of 5 planned) Seventeen races were completed of 20 scheduled. In accordance with the Rules, each entrant's best 12 finishes (70 percent of the races completed) were totalled to determine their final seasonal position. To promote participation, and also in accordance with the Rules, boats completing less than 12 races were awarded 14 points per unfinished scoring race (total number of boats competing in the series +1). Ties were broken according to the Racing Rules of Sailing. Noteworthy: Seven different boats won races in 2000 (over half the boats participating). Four boats had a shot at second going into the last event. Two boats tied for third overall, with another only two points back. This was Kato's first Great Lakes Championship since joining the fleet in 1994. Kato also won the 2000 North American One Design Championship. As always, "it paid to come and play", as boats which attended several regattas finished higher in the seasonal standings.

2000 NORTH AMERICAN ONE DESIGN CHAMPIONSHIP 2000 Chicago NOOD Regatta June 16-18, 2000 Chicago, Illinois Second of four events in the 2000 Great Lakes Championship Series Five Races Conditions were breezier than typical at this event. Four boats won races. Six boats had top-three finishes. Several reports indicated that the racing was as tight as ever and that the top eight boats ALL spent time in the lead and were consistently in the hunt throughout. Most races found several boats finishing within mere feet and seconds of each other (often unclear as to who finished ahead). The top story was clearly that Don Rychlinski's Kato finally earned a spot on the podium after several years of disappointing finishes (in spite of several Great Lakes Series trophies). Joining Don's crew was fellow 9.1 owner Lewis Buell of South Haven who couldn't launch this year due to low lake levels. Fellow South Haven sailor and two time past North American Champion Chris Sundberg and Stimulator was clearly in the hunt, but suffered in race one with a broken main halyard. 1999 Great Lakes and NA Champion Greg Young and Spectra was fast as always, but not fast enough to catch Kato. Other noteworthy performances included Kahuna's win in race 4 and Tenacity's consistent top half finishes. The Great Lakes fleet also welcomed newcomers Freddie Narvaez (Atrevida, formerly of Texas) and Ed Lewis (Saucy, formerly of Waukegan). FINAL PLACE/BOAT NAME/RACE1/RACE2/RACE3/RACE4/RACE5/TOTAL 1. Saturday's breezes were 12-25 knots. The second race was shortened to 2 legs & the third race canceled due to bad weather arriving. Sunday's breezes were 7-15 knots, beautiful day. Best competition was during Sunday's last race. In the final seconds of the race we managed to get into a port/starboard situation with Entropy, who was holding 2nd place at the time. Entropy was forced to tack away giving me the 2nd. We also had a very challenging dart match on Friday night at Wolski's with Entropy taking the Title and hats. |

For those of you wondering, the results listed above are from the first event of the Class Association's 2000 Great Lakes One Design Championship Series on Lake Michigan. This regatta was held in South Haven Michigan on June 3 and 4, 2000. As always, the results were mixed with three different boats winning races and a tie for second overall after five races. Seven boats made the start with ten 9.1 Meter owners in attendance. The next event of this series will be the 2000 Sailing World/Chicago NOOD Regatta on June 16-18, 2000. As in the past, this event will also constitute the 2000 North American One Design Championship. Twelve or thirteen boats are registered for that event! |

The Tri-State had another great set of racing over the Labor Day weekend. The start was a Friday night race from Chicago to Benton Harbor( 55 miles) with the wind swinging back and forth through 60 degrees and ranging from 7 to 20 knots. We did 4 head sail changes and used the 1, 2, and 3. The second leg was on Sunday from Benton Harbor to Michigan City( 35 miles) had a spinnaker start and a tacking finish - on the opposite tack as the start. The wind was from 5 to 20 knots. Leg 3 was on Monday from Michigan City to Chicago( 25 miles) and had wind that was another royal Lake Michigan northwester. The wind was blowing all Sunday night around 25 knots and created 10-12 foot waves. The waves were coming directly between the break water entrance and where very steep and close together. 8 boats had damage going out through entrance including a J-30 that broke their rudder, washed back into the inner break water, anchored, and were towed back to the rafting area by the Coast Guard. They fixed the rudder during the day on Monday and had the boat back in Chicago by Tuesday afternoon. A new leg record was set by a SC-70 of 2hrs 7mnts. Kahuna finished a second in section with leg finishes of 5, 2, 3. |

The S2 9.1, Pagan Baby won the millineum 2000 Around Lake Huron 500 mile double handed race. The first leg starts at Sarnia, Ontario rounding a mark at Goderich, Ontario then finishing at Rogers City, Michigan for a total of 220 miles. It was spinnaker work in light air to the mark at Goderich (58 miles). The wind increased from the southwest at the mark. It was tough flying spinnaker up without rounding up. The headsail went up, in preparation to dropping the chute, when it was noticed that the speed went up a full knot. We stayed low 5 degrees or so and footed off -- going fast. We figured the wind would lighten before we got to Presque Isle 100 miles away and we could then reach up at a good angle. It worked! When we reached Presque Isle 14 hours later the weather forecast from Alpena, Michigan was indicating that the wind was going from the SW to the NE and then around to the west. We jibed on the new wind from the NE. We were worried though. We couldn't see any other boats. As we got to the point of rounding Pesque Isle figuring jibing on on the rhumb line to Adams Point, the wind died and when it came back it was from the SE. We then saw alot of boats rounding Presque Isle along the shore and we couln't get there. Luckly, they sailed into a hole and could not get out, giving us a chance to catch up. When we finally got there hours later we found that one of the boats was a Capo 30, rating 111 (not in our class), and a Catalina 34 with a double spreader mast and tall rig that was in our class. The wind shifted to the west. It was now a beat of 26 miles to Adams point. The Catalina tacked to cover us. We sailed into a 30 degree header and tacked to cross and cover them. It was a 26 mile match race. We changed to the heavy 150. We were then pointing higher and going faster than the Catalina. They tacked away into a fog bank. We couldn't see them! What do we do? We checked the GPS and decided we had to sail our own race without covering. We managed to hold on and finished around 10 PM Sunday. This was the first leg of the race. The next day was a lay day with party, food and awards. On Tuesday the second leg started and we finished at Port Elgin, Ontario 120 miles away at 5 AM Wednesday. The wind had shifted around to the NW and it was a sleigh ride until the wind died and went east early Wednesday morning. After finishing, there was breakfast and then BBQ in the evening. Thursday morning the start was in extremely light air we jibing away from the Capo 30 to catch a shaft of air along the shore. They jibed to cover in light NE air. The wind continued to build all day reaching 20 knots. We did everything we could to hang on to the faster Capo 30. The finish at Sarnia (120 miles) was at around midnight. We figured that we might have won on corrected time over the Capo and over the Sabre 34, Jenneau 34, and the others on actual time. On Friday we then took Pagan Baby up the Michigan coast to the Les Cheneaux islands (238 miles)arriving at 5 AM Sunday. That's quite a bit of sailing for a crew of two! Sure was fun though. The race from Sarnia to Rogers City is the annual Lake Huron Doublehanded Challange. This was the 15th time Pagan Baby has sailed that race. It is appropriately named. |

The 2000 Verve was held in the 3rd weekend of August with 3 days(5 races)of great racing. Over 200 boats were there racing on 3 separate courses. The Chicago S2 9.1s had great success with George Darrel/Paradox winning class 7 and Loren Thompson/Kahuna placing second. Sling Shot had a great series but missed the first day of racing and finished with 3 3rds for the races they were able to sail in. |

The final race for Chicago , the MORF Open , is over and it was another challenging series. The first weekend had 15 to 20 knot winds out of the NE which created some big waves. The second weekend brought 15 to 27 knot winds out of the SE with small waves. It was another MORF Open that raised havoc both with boat equipment and the crews. The HOOK race is over and it was a great long distance event -200 miles. Winds 0-20, beating, running, tacking, gybing, and deciding where to find the wind best for speed. Paradox won class 2 and was 2nd in fleet Kahuna was 3rd in class and Nomad was 6th. The rest of you missed a great race and I hope to see you there next year.
