S2 9.1 Annual Class Association Meeting Chicago Navy Pier February 2, 2002 Special Note: Please read these minutes keeping this in mind: During this meeting your loyal correspondent did not have the responsibility for taking minutes and did not know that he was going to have to publish them, so he wasn’t paying any attention. He wrote these minutes in March, gratefully using an outline of the meeting that was prepared by Lisa Corder, but time does shade one’s memory. Roll Call: Those attending were: Russ Fender, Scott and Lisa Corder, Carl Peterson, Alan Redmond, Chris Sundberg, Gary Hendrickson, Eric Oesterle, Jerry Salaja, Loren Thompson, Dan Rychlinski, Bob Wagner, and Mike Greenwald. Last year’s meeting minutes were approved as published. Reports from class officers: Commodore – Russ Fender Class membership has been renewed with U.S. Sailing. Secretary/Treasurer Scott Corder Annual 2001 financial report with 2002 Budget handout distributed Income was $830, Expenses were $1,127.92, Loss for 2001 was $(297.92) 2001 Year-End bank balance was $1481.33 Class lost money last year. 2002 budget remains very tight. Need more members. Membership – Scott distributed a handout showing a table of membership level over recent class history. Last year there were 41 Regular Members and 5 Associate Memberships. There have been as many as 53 and 8 dues-paid members in 1998, the year before the Class started investing in the expense of a Class website and posting information about the boat on the internet. Discussion followed. Class Rules Committee – Chris Sundberg Keel Investigation Report A report summary was distributed as a handout. Gary Hendrickson had been assigned to carry out an investigation to try to answer the questions: What is the definition for the shape & dimensions of the 9.1 keel? How well do boats’ keels agree with a “standard class keel”, if any? How do the Compu-Keels templates compare to 9.1 keel standards? As part of the project he organized a keel measurement campaign that was performed by many members of the Lake Michigan fleet. Results and conclusions were presented for review and acceptance. This report has subsequently been posted on the website under the topic Deep Draft Keels, along with a collection of information and data that was gathered during the project. Discussion followed about how other one-design classes manage keel shape issues and the use of third party keel templates with their class rules. After agreement that the 9.1 Class Rules may not be changed at this meeting without prior notice, Chris Sundberg and Gary Hendrickson proposed the following two resolutions, which were seconded and accepted by a majority vote: Resolution #1 It is resolved that the document that defines the dimensions and shape of the S2 9.1 Meter deep draft keel is Graham & Schlageter Naval Architects Inc. Drawing No. 035-09A, Alt “A,” Keel Sections & Bolt Pattern, dated 6/30/83. Resolution #2 It is resolved that the template set for the 9.1 Meter Deep Draft Keel offered by Computer Keels of Edina, Minnesota, conforms to the requirements contained in the specification drawing adopted by the 9.1 Class Association. The Class Rules Committee may use these templates as a tool to assess keel compliance with Class Rules. The Commodore directed the Rules Committee to wordsmith Resolution #1 into a proposed Class Rules change for Part 2, Article 4A1, for consideration by the Class at the next Class Meeting. Sportswear: No report. Webmaster – Russ Fender Russ distributed a handout containing a Class Website Traffic Report, a Class Bulletin board Report, and a New Sections added during 2001 Report. Over a 14-month period ending Dec. 31, 2001 our site had 27,833 unique hits or visits. Unique hit means a visit by a certain person within a 24-hour period, no matter how many times in that period. This averages to 1,855 unique hits per month and 62 unique hits or visits per day. For a site of our type these are extremely high numbers. Reviewing other one design class websites, both factory sponsored and class only sponsored we are seeing a tremendous amount of traffic. The result of this information is we are finding more 9.1 owners and they are finding us. Quite a few site visitors who are using the facilities it contains are not contributing to the expenses of maintaining the site through their membership in the Class Association. Discussed adding “banners” or links as a way of funding the web site. Web site can allow paying members to obtain 9.1 owners’ list. There was discussion about whether limiting certain facilities on the website to dues-paying Class members is feasible. Russ proposed a charge to by-laws to provide that email notification to the membership serves as official notice of Class business, as well as mailings. This was seconded and passed. The Class rules will have to be revised accordingly. Bulletin Board: At the end of 2001 our Class Bulletin Board had 406 messages posted by 84 different users. Of these users 54 people have registered profiles. The Technical topic has the largest number of posts with 256 messages is 54 sub-topics from “Babystay Removal” to “Yanmar Engine Issues” Three former 9.1 owners reported that they sold their boats by having their boats post in the “S2 9.1’s For Sale” section of our board. This saved them a considerable amount in brokerage fees. Additionally a number of members have reported that they find the “Equipment Parts/Wanted & Parts For-Sale” sections have been very helpful. Section Additions in 2001: The Factory Catalog/Manual section has been greatly expanded. Anyone who has more of this type of data, please contact the Webmaster. There is now a 2002 Membership Form on the website that can be printed. The photo gallery is open for further growth. One may contact the Webmaster to add their photos to this section. Race Chairman – Don Rychlinski Don announced June 14-16 2002 the date for the annual 9.1 North American Championship Regatta as part of the Chicago NOOD Regatta at the Chicago Yacht Club. The trend in 9.1 attendances at this regatta has been from 13-14 boats down to 8 last year. Eight boats is the minimum requirement for a separate class start at this regatta. Discussion followed on promoting participation at this event. The 9.1 Class Association annual meeting was paused while Don led a discussion on the 2002 local fleet’s Lake Michigan championship series. The Lake Michigan series is down in attendance. It is clear we need to make some changes in the race schedule. A handout of potential races for consideration was distributed. Scott proposed adding a port-to-port series consisting of South Shore Yacht Club’s Queen’s Cup, a night race across Lake Michigan, and Racine Yacht Club’s 196 mile Hook Race to Wisconsin’s Door County vacationland. Seconded and passed. It is hoped that this new series will attract the participation of several boats from the northern half of Lake Michigan, and also those who prefer sailing in a distance race venue. Lake Michigan Championship Buoy Series: A vote was taken on each race proposed in the handout, top voted races are preferred. Chris moved for four races: Chicago NOOD, SSYC buoy regatta July 27-28, Holland, Michigan regatta August 24-25, and the Queen’s Cup. Seconded and passed. Scoring for buoy series: Scott proposed all races count, no throw-outs. No 2nd on this. Chris proposed to count a 65% ratio for the season. Scott moved we count 70%. Seconded and passed, 4-1. 2001 Lake Michigan championship series trophies were awarded, as follows: 1st KATO Rychlinski Milwaukee, WI 2nd STIMULATOR Sundberg South Haven, MI 3rd ENTROPY Daniels Waukegan, IL 4th SLINGSHOT Oesterle/Greenwald Chicago, IL The 9.1 Class Association annual meeting was resumed. Russ Fender handed out the trophies for last year’s annual class championship regatta, as follows: 1st KATO Don Rychlinski Milwaukee, WI 2nd STIMULATOR Chris Sundberg South Haven, MI 3rd ENTROPY Dick Daniels Waukegan, IL 4th PARADOX George Darrell Chicago, IL There has been an official vacancy in the Class Treasurer office since Mike Greenwald resigned and Scott Corder filled the breach for the balance of last year. The members owe Scott a further debt of gratitude. Commodore Fender asked for nominations for the office of Secretary/Treasurer. Chris Sundberg nominated Gary Hendrickson, who declined, saying he feared he couldn’t put in the time that position demands. He accepted nomination to the position of Treasurer, seconded and passed. There was nothing further for the good of the Class, and Commodore Russ Fender adjourned the annual meeting for a tour of the Chicago Strictly Sail Boat Show and a beer gathering at 3:30 at the show oasis at the west end of the exhibit hall, with dinner attended by most coming later on.
