MINUTES FROM THE 2001 ANNUAL CLASS MEETING - February, 3, 2001 Present: All current Officers, a total of nearly 30 people, including owners of 11 boats from four states. COMMODORE'S REPORT The Class is now an official US Sailing member Class. Dues of $75 for 2001 membership have been paid. Class will now enjoy even greater visibility on the US Sailing web site. Other benefits of membership will be explored. The Class had 47 regular and 5 associate memberships paid in 2000. In 1999 there were 37 and 4 respectively. In 1998 there were 50 and 8. Although only 128 boats exist, the Class continues to expand its mailing list and currently has accurate knowledge of nearly 90 boats. Chris Sundberg spoke for the entire group when he expressed satisfaction that although only 11 boats from the Midwest were represented at the meeting, the consistent number of paid memberships indicates a widespread support for the efforts made by the Class to serve its members on a national basis. It was also noted that several memberships have recently been received from owners who discovered the Class on the internet in the past twelve months. It was agreed that the Class' efforts are proving fruitful and that this should continue to result in steadily increasing membership totals. Annual income from dues continues to roughly equal the annual expenses of the Class. The Class treasury continues to enjoy an ongoing balance of approximately $1500 over and above the annual expenses. Annual expenses are identified as follows: web-site server fees, domain name registration, trophies and mailing expenses. In 2000, the Class Treasury was transferred from a savings account to a checking account to ease the process of paying expenses. The Class web address domain name (www.s291.com) has recently been renewed. WEB SITE UPDATE AND DEMONSTRATION Russ Fender provided a very helpful demonstration of the web site which was projected on the wall for all to easily see. All basic features and recent updates to the site were shown. The process of establishing a "User Profile" was clearly outlined. Russ explained and demonstrated the extremely useful features including the ability to receive automatic email notification of posts to the bulletin board. This demonstration was very well received. RULES COMMITTEE REPORT The proposed By Law changes regarding Officer titles and duties were discussed at length. It was noted that the appointed positions in Section 8 should report to a Governing Committee Officer. A brief modification was agreed upon to address this issue. Chris Sundberg moved for a vote, Don Rychlinksi seconded. The proposed By Law changes were approved unanimously. The resulting changes can be found in the By Laws currently posted on the web site. A lengthy discussion of the Rules regarding the length of battens allowed in #3 (jib) headsails followed. Loren Thompson moved that the Rules be re-written to simply allow three battens (removing any limits as to length). Don Rychlinski seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The resulting changes can be found in the By Laws currently posted on the web site. A discussion of keel and hull fairing then took place with the focus being on discrepancies recently found on several templates available for the keel. After lengthy discussion, it was determined that no Rules change was currently necessary. It was further agreed that the Rules Committee would investigate the accuracy of the keel templates available from CompuKeels. It was also agreed that if the original designers (G&S) approve these templates, the Class should consider purchasing a set of templates that would serve as the Rules standard and that could be loaned to members. Progress on this matter will be reported as it develops. 2001 RACING SCHEDULE It was unanimously agreed that the 2001 Great Lakes and 2001 North American Championship would be the same as in past years. Scores from the Racine Yacht Club "Hook" race will also be allowed if four Class members participate and finish the race. Mike Greenwald moved, Don Rychlinski seconded. Unanimously passed. Chris Sundberg then moved that the number of finishes scored for the Great Lakes Championship be lowered from 70 percent of finished races to a percentage that might further encourage participation. After much discussion, a motion was made to lower the percentage to 65 percent. The motion was seconded. The motion failed by a 6-5 vote. As a result, the 2001 Great Lakes Championship will continue to be scored as before. It was, however, agreed by all that the Rules Committee will research and survey the membership regarding this issue throughout the 2001 race season. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Nominations were solicited for the new Officer titles. The following officers each received unanimous support in their new roles: Commodore: Russ Fender Past Commodore: Scott Corder Secretary/Treasurer: Mike Greenwald Rules Chairman: Chris Sundberg Racing Chairman: Don Rychlinski It should be noted that these members will serve a two year term in these positions.
