Lance I see - I had the corrosion problem too, only from the outside. My boat is a 1984 which spends half the time in salt water. If your boat is "older" (1983 or 1984) you may want to pull the fuel tank and check the underside (where all the corrosion happens.) Good luck Mike Bergmann | ||

Michael, Thanks for the info. I failed to mention that I removed the original water tank ( lots of corrosion inside the tank) a few years ago because a previous owner had installed another water tank forward in the lazerette. Its further aft but I keep it empty for racing . So this has left me some options. Lance | ||

Hi Lance i moved all my tanks around in 2004 because of problems with the aluminum water and fuel tanks (see my post under "Tanks!"). It would be nice to have a bigger holding tank to port, and move the fuel tank to starboard, but where do you put the fresh water tank? I have the original fuel tank in the original location. I have removed it from the boat twice, once to repair it as I described, and once last winter to check the repairs. Everything looks OK. When I remove it, I turn it upside down with the fittings over a funnel and a jerry jug to catch the last bit of fuel in the tank. This gets most of any sludge or deposits. If you are getting a lot of crud in the tank I suggest you drain it and check for corrosion on the bottom. I would be careful about a port in the tank - cutting into metal around fuel can be dangerous. You also have to make sure that your new opening is fuel tight with the boat heeled - leaks are not fun. I have a 13-gallon polyethylene rectangular holding tank forward of the fuel tank on the port side. It butts tight against the fuel tank and rests on some wood strips I screwed to the wood sole. It is a VERY tight fit, but it has worked fine for about 8 years now. The actual usable capacity of the tank is only about 9 gallons (because you can't ever completely drain it or completely fill it) but it is the best I will get without putting more weight forward in the V-berth. Since I still race more than cruise, that matters to me. I have replaced the water tank with a 28-gallon Ronco tank (see my other posts) - that works fine too. | ||

Has anybody moved their fuel tank to the starboard side? In my on going thoughts about putting in a bigger holding tank it occured to me to move the fuel tank or get a new one- then I obviously have more room in the same location for a bigger tank -plumbing would stay the same. This occured to me as I replaced some dirty fuel filters ( after they clogged on the way out to the race course) and decided its time to polish the fuel tank or at least clean it . Has any body installed a cleaning port in their tank? I realize the hoses would be longer( not sure if that's a bad thing?)and I'd have some routing issues along with the fact that the tank has some metal tubes faces aft for the hoses that would face forward on the starboard side. I tried the forward holding tank idea -but that didn't fit as Symbiosis has a cupboard under the V-berth. Lance |
